Understanding The Mind
The Conscious & Subconscious Mind Explained
Did you know that your life is run by your subconscious mind at least 95% of the time? It's true. We all assume we're consciously in control of our lives. We think we know what we want for ourselves and where our future will lead us. We have great plans and ambitions, yet our subconscious mind is the one running the show without our knowledge.
Now that you know... it's time to do something about it and take control.
It can be easier to understand how the subconscious and conscious minds work together if you think of your brain like it's a computer. From birth until about the age of 10, we are like a brand new computer, right out of the box... a blank slate. That computer needs to be set up, programs need to be downloaded in order for that computer to function in this world. Our parents, teachers, caregivers, family, religious leaders, and TV all download information into our minds. This information is the "program" that shapes how we see the world. We have experiences that create emotional responses in us and which shape our beliefs about ourselves and the world around us. This is how our belief-system is formed, and once formed it runs on autopilot in our subconscious mind. We are constantly learning, growing, and modifying our behavior according to this program.
Think of your subconscious mind as the underlying hardware that tells your computer (which is your brain) what to do. Your subconscious mind tells your heart to beat, it tells your hand to pull back from the hot stove, it tells your eyes to squint when the sun is shining into them, and millions of other actions and behaviors based upon the initial "programming" it received when you were a child. The subconscious programming of your mind was set in place by the time you were about 10 years old. Since then, you have basically been living your life from the viewpoint of a child... a child that may be hurt, insecure, scared or even ashamed due to things that happened in the past.
Your conscious mind, thinking back to the computer reference, is like the software that you run each day and is actively utilizing the screen. None of these could function if the underlying hardware (the subconscious mind) was not running in the background. We naively think we are in control throughout our day because we appear to be opening and closing apps, but the truth is we're not. Our underlying beliefs, a.k.a. our subconscious mind is usually in control.
Another analogy for the mind would be to think of it like an iceberg, similar to the picture above. The conscious mind is what we see above the water. The subconscious is what's below the water. It's much larger and has more strength behind it because the "programs" (or beliefs) have lots of emotion fueling then. The thoughts with the most emotion behind them are always the ones that win out. By this I mean we may consciously want to achieve something, but if subconsciously we strongly believe we are not good enough or capable, we will not succeed. Our subconscious mind will win out, being that it has more emotion fueling it, and we will find a way to sabotage ourselves and prove just how "not good enough" we actually are.
That is until now...
Now you know the truth. Now you know you have the ability to make changes that will have a positive impact on your life. With the help of hypnotherapy, which allows you to talk to your subconscious mind and "re-write" the program, you can begin to create a life of peace, joy, harmony, success, health, or whatever else you desire.
